Obesity is a modern problem driven by poor diet, lack of exercise and a poor relationship with our food. Fish and seafood can be beneficial in helping to tackle this problem.
The facts- Obesity figures in England have nearly quadrupled in the last 25 years (NHS Direct)
- Heart and circulatory disease is the biggest killer in the UK (BHF CHD Statistics 2004)
- Most of us are consuming too much saturated fat (Henderson et al 2003)
- High saturated fat intake is linked to Coronary Heart Disease and diabetes (British Nutritional Foundation)
At British Seafood we are passionate about responsible food choices; we feel it is important to provide our customers with healthy food options.
- Fish is a good source of protein and is very low in saturated fat (FSA)
- Fish, especially oily fish, is rich in omega 3 essential fatty acids
- There is evidence to suggest that 2-3 portions of oily fish a week reduce the chances of a heart attack (Burr et al 1989).
- The British Heart Foundation and the Food Standards Agency recommend at least two portions of fish a week, one of which should be oily fish
